History of Wandle
Wandle has been providing good quality homes and services in south London for nearly 40 years and is keen to actively explore and create opportunities for growth and expansion.
Our origins can be traced to 1967, when the Merton Family Housing Trust was formed to provide affordable rented housing for people like unsupported wives and mothers and larger-than-average families.
Soaring house prices in the early 1970s led to increased demand from people who couldn't afford to buy or to rent on the open market and couldn't - or didn't want to - become local authority tenants. So in 1973 the Trust merged with Orford Mount Housing Association to form Wandle Housing Association.
Wandle remained a charity but was now run as an efficient and viable business. As a result it became the first London housing association to receive the prestigious Investors in People award in 1994/5.
In 1996 Wandle merged with Contour Housing Association, which worked predominantly in supported housing. This significantly expanded Wandle's expertise and established a firm foundation for further growth in this area.
Further expansion followed in January 2002 when Wandle acquired Grange Housing Association and in June 2005 when it took over Solon Wandsworth.
Our programme of diversification and expansion continues.
