You should normally contact your local authority for services like environmental health (such as refuse collection, noise caused by neighbours, parking permission and information about health services and schools in the area).

Organisations that regulate social landlords

The Tenant Services Authority: the new regulator for affordable housing. Their goal is to raise the standard of services for tenants.

Housing Ombudsman Service: residents and others with a complaint about the way their homes are managed can complain to the Housing Ombudsman if they are dissatisfied with the way their landlord has responded to their complaint.  Tel: 0845 7125 973.

The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA): creates the opportunity for people to live in high quality, sustainable neighbourhoods. They provide funding for affordable housing, bring land back into productive use and improve the quality of life by raising standards for the physical and social environment.

Benefit and tax credit calculations and other advice

Entitled to: provided free web-based calculators to help people work out their entitlement to benefits and tax credits.

Turn2Us: a charity that helps people access the money available to them – through welfare benefits, grants and other help.

Multikulti: Multikulti provides accessible, accurately translated advice and information in community languages in the following areas: debt, employment, health, education, immigration, racism and discrimination.

Shelter: housing and homelessness charity. They can offer advice and support to tenants and homeowners. Also see Shelter's pages on leaseholder rights and responsibilities.

Citizens Advice Bureau: helps people resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing free, independent and confidential advice.

Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS): is the leading national tenant participation organisation working to promote tenant empowerment.

Croydon ARC:  Croydon ARC is a charity that was set up to help low income families by providing quality low cost furniture and domestic appliances, providing a training facility for unemployed people and reducing waste and landfill.  

Help with finding/moving home

Homeswapper: is for social tenants (in rented property) who want a house swap (or flat swap). This is also called mutual exchange. If you live in a council house or housing association property you can swap.

Housing Options: is the gateway to all affordable housing in London. If you are unable to afford to buy your own home or rent a good quality home on the open market then Housing Options can help you. You will find all the homes that are available to buy through new Build HomeBuy  (formerly known as shared ownership), a part buy, part rent opportunity and information on other affordable housing schemes.
