Charge Safe – London Fire Brigade

London Fire Brigade (LFB) has launched its new Charge Safe campaign to raise awareness of lithium battery safety. Lithium batteries are commonly found in e-bikes and e-scooters, and the campaign highlights the importance of using, charging and storing them safely to help reduce the risk of a fire.

Over the past six years, the number of e-bike and e-scooter fires in London has increased from 31 in 2020 to 206 in 2025, with the London Fire Brigade receiving an emergency call relating to an e-bike or e-scooter fire every 48 hours.

Fires involving e-bikes and e-scooters continue to rise and are becoming a significant risk to residents and the public across London, with three people losing their lives since 2023 due a fire caused by a charger or lithium battery found in e-bikes and e-scooters, alongside hundreds of individuals who have been injured as a result of burns and injuries sustained from evacuating a building.

LFB Charge Safe campaign aims to raise awareness of the fire risks associated with e-bikes and e-scooters. We encourage any residents who own an e-bike or e-scooter or lives with someone who does, to read the following advice provided by LFB:

  • Never store or charge e-bikes, e-scooters or their batteries in hallways, stairwells or any other escape route.
  • Ensure working smoke alarms are installed and regularly tested.
  • Always use the charger supplied by the manufacturer, or a suitable replacement recommended by them.
  • Avoid modifying e-bikes, e-scooters, batteries or chargers.
  • Be careful when purchasing second-hand devices or batteries.
